Salvation Army appealing for toys that will make a child's Christmas

Wednesday, November 26, 2008, 15:54

THE Salvation Army has launched an appeal for donations of new toys and gifts to give to children in Bridgwater for Christmas.

Bridgwater Mayoress Kay Granter joined Major John McCombe and children from the Bridgwater Salvation Army's MADD club and staff at Superdrug in Angel Place to launch the Christmas Present Appeal.

Kind-hearted people are asked to take unwrapped presents for boys and girls aged from birth to 16 years to both Superdrug stores in Bridgwater and the presents will be distributed to children and families by the Salvation Army and social services.

Major McCombe said: "Millions of children and young people have benefited from the gifts donated to The Salvation Army over many years.

"By giving a gift to our Christmas Present Appeal you can make a real difference in someone's life at Christmas."

Major McCombe reminded people not to forget boys who are sometimes left out of appeals.

He said: "Many families linked with local partner agencies such as single-parent support networks and family centres have come to rely on the toys donated through The Salvation Army's annual gift appeal."

Last year people donated 500 gifts and they were distributed to about 250 people and families in the area who might have struggled at Christmas.

Suggested gifts for children from birth to three years are soft toys, colourful and fun educational toys, cot mobiles, clothes, bath toys, CDs of suitable music and nursery rhymes.

Gifts for toddlers aged three to five years could be dolls, cars, lorries, soft toys, colourful and fun educational toys, books, CDs of music and nursery rhymes, suitable DVDS, colouring sets, pencils, crayons, books and puzzles.

Suitable gifts for younger children would be educational games and toys, stationery, CDs and family-friendly DVDs, books, puzzles, word search and crosswords.

For older children and teenagers gifts could be games and toys, stationery, CDs, DVDs, books, T-shirts, hair ornaments, gloves, scarves, hats and toiletries with non-allergenic ingredients if possible.

Major McCombe added: "We believe every child deserves a new gift at Christmas, and are therefore unable to take used or second hand items for the Christmas Present Appeal."

The appeal runs until Friday, December 19.
